Novels

Each post must be a review of a novel which was originally published in a language other than English but has since been translated into English. Your post must mention the original author, original title and original language, as well as the English translator and English title. We welcome translations of novels originally published in any language, inclduing minority, endangered, Indigenous and ancient languages. We want to promote the literary traditions of all languages.

There is no specific genre you must write about. We recognise that quality writing can exist in all genres. All we ask is that you choose a novel that people will admire, enjoy and think about and which has literary merit. It does not need to be the oldest or most famous novel in your language’s literary canon.

You must be fluent in the original language of the novel. While your post will naturally analyse the story, remember that you are also reviewing the English translation, so this aspect needs to be incorporated into the article. The challenge is striking the right balance between your review of the story and your review of the translator’s choices.

You may write in any dialect of English you like.

Consider that the ultimate purpose of this column is to encourage readers to read books from around the world. Therefore, you need to select a novel that you genuinely enjoyed and would recommend. Please do not include spoilers: your article needs to draw people into reading the book.

We may not be able to address each submission. If you do not hear from us, assume that we are still considering your post. You are free to submit this post elsewhere. Please immediately let us know if it has been accepted at another publication.

The maximum word count for each post is 1,500 words.

Include a short contributor biography and your website and social media links (if applicable). You have the right to use a pseudonym publicly but we will need to know your actual identity.

You must have attained the age of 18 years.

Please provide us with the ISBN of the translation you are reviewing.

We pay for each article. We currently pay AU$100 for per post. Contributors are responsible for providing accurate payment details. We currently make payments via PayPal and Wise. Additional payment methods may be offered at our discretion.

Contributors must read the Guest Post Submission Terms & Conditions before submitting.
